A57 – NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW presents, for the first time in Brussels, “1986, erreurs superposées”, an exhibition by Maël G. Lagadec.
From a film accidentally double-exposed during his childhood, the artist develops a body of work in which the image becomes a site where temporalities and narratives overlap. Between archive and the reactivation of a pivotal moment in his life, these photographs bring forth a fragmented memory where disappearance, filiation, and the persistence of memories intersect.
uly 1986, I'm two years old.
On the banks of the Dordogne in France,
Thierry and Marie-Martine are spending their last summer together.
For reasons that will remain a mystery, their love affair is over
and Marie-Martine wants sole custody of their son.
In order to forget, Thierry flies away for a new life in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
June 2017, Marie-Martine is swept away by the waters of the Dordogne.
After many years without any contact with my father,
I feel it is important to get back in touch. If only to tell him this sad news.
One month later, I receive several scanned rolls of film.
One of them is titled: 1986, erreurs superposées.
